Welcome to Trinity

A Note from Pastor Matt

Dear Pilgrim,

Welcome to Trinity. By visiting us on Sunday, you are choosing something counter-cultural which fewer folk are bothering to risk: going to church. Thank you for taking the risk. You are about to discover many traditions, histories, and Anglican idiosyncrasies that may need some storytelling, and your patience.

Trinity Church is a fellowship of prodigal sons and daughters who have learned to answer God's searching question, "Where are you?" with our own hearty "Here I am, in Christ!"

We practice being found by God each week in our work places, homes, and neighborhoods. On Sundays we practice being found by God in the "Gospel aerobics" at church by leaning into the liturgical dance of worship, confession, preaching, & feasting together at the Lord's table. His hospitality both brings us home, and sends us out into the world nourished and renewed.

We look forward to walking with you,
Pastor Matt

Kids on Sunday:
Godly Play & Nursery

During the 10am service, we have multiple classes for children to attend for part of the service.

Nursery & Preschool. We believe that our youngest members reflect God’s image just as clearly as our older children and adults. In Nursery our 1 and 2 year olds are cared for, read to, and engaged by our loving volunteers and youth helpers. They get time to play and explore while mom and dad are uninterrupted during the sermon. In our Preschool classroom for 3-4 year olds, we begin to engage their wonder through a short bible story time and a liturgy of prayer and passing the peace. They are also given time to play, create, and explore together.

We introduce our early elementary children to Jesus using Godly Play, an experience with Scripture that honors children’s deep capacity for Jesus. Using Montessori insights, we invite children to discover God for themselves through the Biblical stories. Our trained storytellers walk the children through the grand overarching narrative of the Old and New Testament (around 40 stories), alternating each year. Children respond each Sunday to the stories through "I wonder" questions and unstructured art sessions (oil pastel, watercolor, clay), acting, or re-playing the story and working with the wooden story figures on their own. Their session closes with prayer and a feast.

Our upper elementary children meet during this time for Beatitude Kids to work through Jesus' Beatitudes found in Matthew 5, and learn about life in various third world countries.  They explore saints throughout history connecting them to Biblical stories and God’s work in their own lives. The kids grow in their relational connection in various extra activities throughout the year.

What to Expect at our Service

Many people at Trinity are new to Anglicanism. So don't worry! If that's you, too, you're in good company. In an Anglican service, you’ll find an ancient liturgy in a modern setting – 4th century prayers being recited by young and old together, 8th century songs being sung, 16th century theology guiding our words, 21st century art, and this week’s freshly baked bread being offered for everyone at communion.

You may not know the words at first (everything is provided for you on powerpoint) but after a few weeks, you might just find the rhythm liberating!

All of this is because we want to attend to the gospel in its many forms – the Scriptures, the Sermon, the Prayers, Communion, Art, Music, and one another.

Sunday morning is the time for our entire community, young and old, to be physically present to one another within the community of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  We are always surrounded by and immersed in this Trinitarian life!  But Sunday is the day we look each other in the eye, receive the bread and wine from one another's hands, and hear the peace and forgiveness of Christ from one another's lips.

Liturgy
You’ll notice a few things about our church service: we follow a pattern of prayers and scripted words. This is called our ‘liturgy’ which literally means the work of the people. When we come to church, we believe we are privileged to be given something to do – not just sit there! We stand, we sit, we kneel, we offer our whole selves and our whole bodies to God. This is our ‘gospel aerobics’ and it doesn’t change much. Rest assured that no one is grading you on your participation. We are all students here – learning to live the liturgy takes a lifetime.
Music
Our music is simple, allowing for space to think and reflect, and draws from old and newer traditions. We enjoy Celtic music, Taize, Psalms, and hymns which span many centuries. The Scriptures tell us that, from the church’s birth, those who made up that tiny far-flung minority loved to sing together - first the Psalms, and then they would innovate by composing hymns of their own. Most of these songs have been lost to us, but the ones we still have we treasure.
Children
We love children and all of the noises and unpredictability that inevitably accompany them wherever they may be found...including our Sunday morning service! Having old and young praying, singing, confessing, and kneeling together is an important part of Trinity life. During part of the second service, we offer nursery and preschool care for children ages 1-4 , although parents are also welcome to walk around with their children whenever they need to throughout the service. Children ages kindergarten through upper elementary are welcome to attend Godly Play or Beatitude Kids for part of the second service.
Communion
Children and adults take communion weekly in our church, because we believe that we are nourished by Christ both in the Word and sacrament. Our church service builds through music, Scripture reading, sermon, and Creed to its high point – which is walking forward and taking communion together. If you do not wish to receive communion (or have your children receive), you can come forward to receive a blessing and still be part of this joyful movement. Don't worry, we'll guide you through during the service so that you know what to do!

Hi There!

A Warm Welcome to Visitors & Newcomers

My name is Karin Abbott and it is my joy to journey alongside people here at Trinity during your first 6 months with us. We invite you into a season of rest and receiving while you discern if Trinity Church might be a good fit for you. I am available for conversation and questions while you process.

Please email me (karin@trinitywenatchee.org) or text/call at (509) 293-3840 to set up a coffee date, ask a question, or whatever you need.
I also encourage you to sign up for The Tidings. It's the best way to know all that is happening while also giving you a flavor of how we seek to be face to face with God, ourselves, and each other at Trinity Church.

Together,
Karin Abbott
